The Chinese-American community in West Des Moines came together to celebrate America’s 250th birthday with a unique cultural fusion event. The celebration featured silk lanterns, conversations in multiple languages, and a buffet with both American and Chinese cuisine.
Celebrating American Culture
Swallow Yan, director of the Chinese Association of Iowa, expressed his pride in being part of the United States. ‘We are very honored to celebrate America’s 250th. We feel this land is our land,’ Yan said. Yusi Chen, a student from Shanghai, shared her appreciation for American culture, particularly the tradition of potluck gatherings.
Organizers emphasized that the event was about more than just celebrating American or Chinese culture individually. It’s a celebration of the intersection between them. Yan also highlighted the contributions of the Chinese-American community to the state, including their work as business leaders, professionals, and community supporters.
