Iowa State selects Nevada fifth‑grader with Down syndrome as Saturday’s Kid Captain

In a heart‑warming community moment, Iowa State University announced that Korbin Trow, a fifth‑grader from Nevada who was born with Down syndrome and is nonverbal, will serve as the Cyclones’ Kid Captain for Saturday’s home game against Bowling Green at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

Kid Captain program celebrates inclusion

The Kid Captain initiative, run in partnership with Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, invites a local child to join the team on the field, receive a special jersey and experience the excitement of a college football game. This year’s selection underscores the university’s commitment to inclusion and to supporting families of children with special needs.

Korbin’s parents describe him as a happy child who is always smiling. Though he does not speak, they say he loves playing baseball with the Miracle League, enjoys time on his iPad, and appreciates the simple comforts of a good hug.

“Having Korbin as our Kid Captain brings a special joy to the entire Cyclones family,” said Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell. “It reminds us why we play – to bring people together and celebrate the spirit of community.”

The Cyclones will face the Bowling Green Falcons at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Fans are encouraged to wear orange and support the team as well as the cause. Blank Children’s Hospital will have a presence at the stadium, offering information about its services for children with medical challenges.

How the Kid Captain program works

Each season, the university selects a child who exemplifies courage and positivity. The Kid Captain participates in pre‑game festivities, walks onto the field with the team, and receives a commemorative jersey. The program also raises awareness for pediatric health issues and provides families with a day of celebration.

Local volunteers and hospital staff help coordinate the event, ensuring that Korbin’s experience is safe, comfortable, and memorable. The partnership with Blank Children’s Hospital reflects a broader effort by Iowa State to engage with community health partners and to highlight the importance of inclusive opportunities for all children.

Tickets for the game are available through the university’s ticket office and online portal. The university encourages fans to arrive early to enjoy the pre‑game activities and to show their support for both the Cyclones and the Kid Captain program.

As the Cyclones take the field, the community will rally around Korbin, celebrating his courage and the shared values of faith, family, and freedom that unite Iowa State supporters.
