A unique gathering focused on sobriety takes place daily at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, where a 12-step program called ‘Meeting on a Stick’ offers solace for people in recovery.
A Safe Space for Recovery
The meetings are held on the second floor of Jalapeño Pete’s, a venue that serves alcohol, but the location was chosen out of convenience, as the original organizer worked there. The meetings provide a safe space for individuals to share their struggles and receive support from others who are going through similar experiences.
Attendees can expect strong coffee and strong bonds, with no judgment. The meetings are open to anyone, whether they are one day or ten years sober. One attendee, who has been attending the meetings for nine years, said, ‘It just helps me keep being a better person. It’s more about being a better person than it is about the alcohol or the substance at this point.’
The concept of holding sobriety meetings in a bar may seem unusual, but it acknowledges the reality of drinking at the fairgrounds while showing that alcohol isn’t necessary to enjoy the event. Another attendee said, ‘When I was drinking, this was my playground; I mean, it’s everywhere, no hiding it. I can’t even explain how much it helps. It just makes my fair so much easier. More fun again.’
