Iowa Republicans Nunn and Miller‑Meeks Support Iran War Powers Resolution after Prior Opposition

In a notable shift, Iowa’s two Republican members of the U.S. House, Rep. Zach Nunn and Rep. Mariannette Miller‑Meeks, joined Democrats in supporting the House’s third passage of a war powers resolution targeting Iran. The vote, which authorizes additional authority for the President to respond to Iranian aggression, marks a reversal from each lawmaker’s earlier stance.

Why the change?

Rep. Nunn told KCCI that his decision was driven by national‑security concerns, not electoral calculations. “I’m not afraid to stand up to the President, the Republican Party, or candidly, Democrats who just want to abandon the situation and run away,” he said. He added that the United States must remain prepared to use kinetic force when necessary and that fallen soldiers from this conflict, including Iowans, deserve congressional responsibility.

Rep. Miller‑Meeks, a 24‑year Army veteran, issued a statement emphasizing the need to limit the mission. “The mission had to stay focused and limited, because Americans do not want another forever war,” she said. She argued that the Iranian regime’s nuclear ambitions have been curbed and that the President must present a clear plan to bring troops home and lower fuel prices.

Critics respond

Both representatives now face sharp criticism from their Democratic opponents. Nunn’s challenger, State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, highlighted that he voted against the resolution five times previously, calling his latest vote “too little, too late” after the conflict has cost Iowans more than $38 billion.

Rep. Miller‑Meeks’ opponent, State Rep. Christina Bohannan, noted that Miller‑Meeks voted for the Iran war five times, linking the ongoing conflict to soaring gas, diesel, and fertilizer prices for Iowans. Bohannan accused Miller‑Meeks of being “out of touch” and only realizing voter anger weeks before the election.

Context of the resolution

The war powers resolution has now passed the House for a third time, reflecting growing bipartisan concern over Iran’s regional activities and nuclear program. Seven Republicans joined Democrats in the latest vote, signaling a modest shift in congressional consensus on how to address the threat.

While the resolution does not yet have Senate approval, its passage in the House increases pressure on the administration to outline a definitive strategy for ending the conflict and reducing the financial burden on American taxpayers.

What’s next?

The measure will move to the Senate, where further debate is expected. Both Iowa lawmakers indicated they will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for policies that protect Iowa families while seeking a swift resolution to the conflict.

Voters in Iowa’s 3rd and 2nd congressional districts will see these positions play out as the midterm campaign season intensifies, with national security and economic impacts remaining central themes in the upcoming races.
