A second Libertarian candidate, Jules Cutler, has withdrawn from Iowa’s November election. Cutler was the running mate of Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Nicholas Gluba. The Libertarian Party of Iowa plans to replace Cutler and another candidate, Marco Battaglia, who withdrew due to a medical emergency.
Background
Cutler and Battaglia were removed from the ballot in June by the State Objection Panel. The panel removed Battaglia because he used a different name on his nomination paperwork, and Cutler was removed for allegedly failing to file a required affidavit of candidacy. The Libertarian Party had planned to appeal the decisions but has now decided to replace the candidates instead.
The party has until August 19 to fill the vacancies. The changes could reshape two races on Iowa’s November ballot, including the governor’s race and the 3rd Congressional District race.
