Iowa Cities Respond to Rise in Coyote Sightings

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports an increase in coyote sightings across the state, prompting cities like Johnston to adjust ordinances and educate residents on how to handle encounters.

Local Response

Johnston Police Chief Dennis McDaniel said the urban coyote population is increasing. The city is responding by updating its coyote ordinance to allow certified operators to trap problem wildlife, ensuring public safety.

Des Moines has a similar ordinance in place. The DNR advises dog owners to keep their pets on a leash when walking in wooded areas and to pick them up if a coyote is nearby. Since both animals are canines, it’s best to avoid letting them interact.

Experts remind the public that coyotes are likely just as afraid of humans as humans are of them. The DNR has released a video offering advice on how to handle encounters with the wild canines.

Coyote Behavior

Coyotes typically weigh between 30 and 40 pounds and are not always aggressive, according to Andy Kellner, a DNR urban wildlife biologist. They are often just trying to ensure their pups are safe.

The howling of coyotes is not a sign of aggression, but rather a form of communication to other packs, Kellner explained.
