The center director will report to the committee with budgets and statutory responsibilities under the Iowa law that established the center, as well as plans for academic programming, outreach, public events, and other activities.

Starting in July 2028, all public university students in Iowa will be required to take six credit hours in civics education, with courses at the University of Iowa to be created and administered by the Center for Intellectual Freedom.
