A recent analysis by MarketWise compared the returns of $10,000 investments in 21 different assets, including cryptocurrency, stocks, ETFs, and collectibles, from January 2021 to April 2026. The results showed significant variations in returns, with some investments yielding life-changing gains and others resulting in total losses.
Top Performers
The top performer was Solana, with a return of 3,476%. Other notable performers included a sealed Pokémon box, which saw a return of 1,750%, and GameStop, which had a return of 469%. Bitcoin, a well-known cryptocurrency, had a return of 141%.
In contrast, some investments performed poorly. Bed Bath & Beyond had a return of -100%, while AMC had a return of -91%. The analysis also looked at the performance of AI ETFs, which had an average return of 28%.
Methodology
The analysis used data from various sources, including Yahoo Finance, CoinGecko, and PriceCharting. The returns were calculated per unit using secondary market or ETF closing prices, and no dividends, rebalancing, or dollar-cost averaging were applied.
The study highlights the importance of timing and hype in investment returns, as well as the need for careful consideration and research before making investment decisions.
