Investigation Launched into Former New Britain Mayor’s Charity Fund

Connecticut’s Attorney General William Tong and Commissioner of Consumer Protection Bryan T. Cafferelli have initiated an investigation into Erin Stewart, former Mayor of New Britain, concerning her management of the Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund. This investigation marks another challenge for Stewart, whose political career faced significant setbacks last month.

Focus on Financial Management

The inquiry centers on two bank accounts associated with the charity, one managed by the Community Foundation of New Britain and another mysterious checking account. The latter is not under the foundation’s control, raising questions about its management. Subpoenas have been issued to Stewart and M&T Bank, while a letter of inquiry was sent to the community foundation.

Investigators aim to determine Stewart’s involvement with the checking account, including its funding sources and expenditure. Stewart is required to provide documents and testify under oath regarding the account’s management.

Charity’s Origins and Purpose

The Mayor’s Trophy Charitable Fund was originally established by Stewart’s father, Tim Stewart, to support youth programs through charitable golf tournaments. Erin Stewart continued this legacy, expanding the charity’s scope. In a 2022 YouTube video, she highlighted the charity’s holistic approach and its significant impact on the community.

However, recent developments have cast a shadow over her tenure. An investigative report by the Crumbie Law Group, commissioned by Stewart’s Democratic successor Mayor Bobby Sanchez, accused her of misusing a city-issued credit card for personal expenses unrelated to city business. The report suggested a criminal investigation into these actions.

Political Implications

These controversies led to Stewart withdrawing from the gubernatorial race just before the Republican state convention, where she was a favored candidate. Additionally, she applied for a non-existent pension benefit, further complicating her political standing.

The Attorney General’s office has requested detailed information from the Community Foundation of New Britain regarding the charity’s purpose and the processes governing its financial distributions. The investigation will continue to unfold, with officials committed to transparency and accountability in charitable activities.
