Instant Noodles Remain Popular

Instant noodles have become a staple in many households around the world, despite their reputation for being unhealthy. The global instant noodle market is projected to grow from $64.67 billion in 2025 to $98.46 billion by 2032.

History of Instant Noodles

Instant noodles were first introduced in Japan in the 1950s by Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin Foods Group. Ando’s goal was to create a food that was delicious, convenient, preservable, affordable, and safe. He achieved this by flash-frying noodles, which removed their moisture and allowed them to be instantly rejuvenated by being soaked in hot water.

Today, instant noodles are enjoyed by people all over the world. China is the largest consumer of instant noodles, with 43,802 million packs consumed per year. Vietnam has the highest per capita consumption, with each citizen eating an average of 81 servings per year.

Popularity in the US

In the United States, the instant noodle market has continuously expanded, with 5.15 billion servings consumed in 2024. The market has evolved to offer a broader range of options, including beef, shrimp, and vegetable-based varieties.

Chef David Lai, an ambassador for Nongshim, a South Korean instant noodle company, believes that instant noodles are a legitimate ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes. He has collaborated with Nongshim to create a new signature flavor and has even used instant noodles in his restaurant, Neighborhood, in Hong Kong.
