OldSchool Outpost, a retro video game and trading card shop in Emerson Plaza on Indy’s south side, is a haven for gamers and collectors of vintage gaming consoles, games, and movies.
A Unique Store
The store, opened by Steven Willoughby four years ago, has become a popular destination for those looking to buy, sell, and trade vintage gaming items. Willoughby, 31, started the business as a side hustle while working as a residential technician for Comcast.
Today, the store is a partnership between Willoughby and Luke Marks, 32, who joined the business in 2025. Marks, a Pokémon aficionado, has been playing since he was 5 years old and views physical games as a multi-generational hobby worth passing down to his children.
A Growing Trend
OldSchool Outpost is part of a growing trend of Gen Z and millennials returning to physical media, such as vinyl records and DVDs. The store’s presence is a testament to the enduring appeal of vintage gaming and the importance of preserving gaming history.
Customers can find a wide range of items at the store, including vintage video game consoles, games, and movies. The store also hosts events and activities, such as Pokémon card trading and video game tournaments.
In May, the store made local headlines after posting security video footage of a man stealing $60-100 worth of Pokémon cards. However, the incident had a positive outcome, as the store’s sales doubled after the incident.
Expansion Plans
Willoughby and Marks are now looking to expand the store by renting out the vacant retail space next door. They plan to use the new space exclusively for video games and DVDs, while the current space will be reserved for board and card games.
