IndyCar practice in Washington, D.C. sets stage for Freedom 250 qualifying

Washington, D.C. – The inaugural IndyCar Freedom 250 weekend began with two practice sessions on the 1.7‑mile street circuit that winds past the Washington Monument, the United States Capitol and other national landmarks. Drivers used the time to gauge the track’s notorious bumps, especially entering turns two and six, before qualifying later today determines the starting grid for Saturday’s race.

Practice highlights

In the first practice session, Kyle Kirkwood posted the quickest lap, edging out series leader Alex Palou. Kirkwood’s pace suggested his team has a solid setup for the bumpy surface. Palou, however, turned the tables in the second session, posting a lap just 0.0766 seconds faster than Kirkwood, reclaiming the top spot.

Scott Dixon, a veteran of the series, posted a strong time that placed him third overall. Arrow McLaren’s Nolan Siegel and Pato O’Ward completed the top five, with Siegel finishing fourth and O’Ward fifth. Their teammate Christian Lundgaard was the sixth‑fastest driver, indicating the Arrow McLaren squad has depth across the field.

Driver impressions

After the first session, Palou spoke to the media about the unique character of the D.C. circuit. He described the experience as “a blast, super fun,” noting the “huge bumps heading into turn two and turn six” that will test drivers’ braking and traction. Palou added, “It’s going to create good racing because it’s tough to get good braking and traction when the bumps are on exits. Really fun, incredible to see the Capitol Hill backdrop.”

Qualifying outlook

Qualifying is scheduled for later today, and the provisional starting order will be filled in as drivers post their fastest laps. With the track’s tight corners and uneven surface, teams will be looking to balance speed with stability. The Freedom 250 promises a competitive field, and fans can expect a dynamic race that showcases both driver skill and the historic scenery of the nation’s capital.

Local IndyCar fans gathered along Constitution Avenue and near the Capitol to watch the practice runs, cheering as the high‑performance machines roared past. The event highlights how a national‑level motorsport can bring excitement to a city’s streets while offering a backdrop that few other venues can match.

What’s next

After qualifying, the final grid will be set for the Freedom 250, slated to start tomorrow. The race will be the first IndyCar event to take place on a circuit that directly incorporates the National Mall, making it a historic moment for both the sport and the city. Stay tuned for updates on the qualifying results and the race day schedule.
