Indiana’s original constitution has returned to Corydon, the place where it was written. The state’s first constitution will be on display at the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site until July 5. Visitors can see the original document from 1816 on display.
Historic Document on Display
Guests can take a guided tour of the site to see the original constitution. Tours also show the original State Capitol building, First State Office building, and the Porter Law office. Tours are included in admission to the site, which is between $16 and $22. Tickets can be purchased online or in person.
The constitution is being loaned to the Historical Society from the Indiana Archives and Records Administration in honor of the 210th anniversary of Indiana’s first constitutional convention in Corydon that took place on June 10. This document served as the state’s constitution until 1851, when the current Indiana Constitution went into effect. Each week, a different page of the 72-page document will be displayed.
