A tragic incident unfolded in Indianapolis when 53-year-old David Potts died days after being tased by police during a traffic stop. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 27 near Holt Road and Oliver Avenue on the city’s southwest side. Indiana State Police reported that Potts was pulled over for a traffic violation, and it was discovered that he had an outstanding theft warrant from Hendricks County.
Investigation Underway
According to investigators, Potts resisted arrest and attempted to flee, prompting the trooper to deploy a Taser. Potts was struck and fell into the grass, later becoming unresponsive. He passed away days after the incident. The case is currently under review by an outside district, and the involved trooper has been placed on administrative duties, a standard procedure in such cases.
Captain Ron Galaviz of the Indiana State Police emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation. “We’re going to conduct a thorough investigation, bringing in investigators from an outside district,” Galaviz stated. He assured that the agency is committed to uncovering the truth without prematurely assigning blame.
Family Concerns
David Potts’ brother, Jason Potts, expressed his concerns about the investigation process, suggesting that an independent review might be necessary to ensure impartiality. He described his brother as a well-liked and good-hearted individual, stating, “He was a very likable guy, funny guy, you know, and I’ve gotten along with everybody. Good-hearted, good man. You didn’t deserve to go out like this, but for sure, no one does.”
Jason Potts also raised questions about the medical findings, noting that the doctor’s report indicated his brother went 40 minutes without oxygen to the brain, which he believes points to negligence.
Police Perspective
Captain Galaviz highlighted the importance of cooperation during police encounters, stating, “Voluntary compliance with what the officer is asking for is always the best practice.” He acknowledged the risks associated with traffic stops, which are being observed nationwide, and stressed the need for awareness during such interactions.
The investigation is ongoing, and the Indiana State Police have pledged transparency and accountability. “Our investigations have led to prosecutions of our own,” Galaviz noted, emphasizing that the agency has nothing to hide.
