Indiana Trooper Shot, Driver Killed in Hammond Traffic Stop Incident

In a tragic turn of events in Hammond, Indiana, a routine traffic stop escalated into a deadly confrontation early Tuesday morning. The incident occurred just after midnight on May 26 along eastbound Interstate 80/94, near the Illinois-Indiana state line in Lake County.

According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), a trooper pulled over a vehicle for a minor traffic violation. The situation quickly intensified when the driver and passenger reportedly became non-compliant, prompting the trooper to hold them at gunpoint while waiting for backup.

Reinforcements arrived in the form of two Lake County Sheriff’s Department deputies and a Hammond police officer. An exchange of gunfire ensued between the driver, identified as 34-year-old Aaron Barnes from Gary, Indiana, and the officers. Tragically, Barnes was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

The ISP trooper, who serves as a K-9 officer, was shot in the chest during the altercation. He was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center for surgery. Thankfully, his condition was reported as stable, and he was released from the hospital later that day to recover at home.

Authorities recovered a handgun at the scene, believed to have been used by Barnes. The female passenger, also 34 years old, was taken into custody and is currently held at the Lake County Jail.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with ISP promising to release more details, including the trooper’s name, at an appropriate time. No other officers or the police K-9 were injured during the incident.
