Indiana ranks 13th nationally for teachers, outpacing Ohio and Michigan

FORT WAYNE, Indiana – Indiana has earned a spot among the nation’s top states for educators, according to the latest WalletHub “Best and Worst States for Teachers” report. The Hoosier State placed 13th overall, a notable rise that puts it ahead of neighboring Ohio (41st), Michigan (22nd) and Kentucky (20th).

Key factors behind the ranking

WalletHub evaluated all 50 states and the District of Columbia on 24 measures, including teacher salaries, income‑growth potential, pupil‑teacher ratios, tenure protections, school spending and the overall academic and work environment. Indiana performed well in several of these categories, ranking 17th for opportunity and competition and 15th for academic and work environment.

These scores reflect Indiana’s commitment to supporting teachers through competitive compensation and stable employment conditions. The study notes that states with stronger pay, robust tenure safeguards, adequate school funding and positive workplace climates tend to rank higher, and Indiana’s policies align with those criteria.

How Indiana compares nationally

Virginia topped the list, followed by Utah, Washington, New York and Illinois. The bottom five states were South Dakota, New Hampshire, Maine, Montana and Hawaii. While teachers across the country continue to face challenges—WalletHub reports an average decline of $3,728 in real wages over the past 16 years—Indiana’s position suggests it is mitigating some of those pressures better than many peers.

For families in Indiana, the ranking offers reassurance that local schools are staffed by educators who enjoy relatively favorable working conditions. Stronger teacher support can translate into better classroom experiences for students, a priority for parents who value quality education as a cornerstone of family stability.

What the report means for Indiana’s future

Education leaders in Indiana can use these findings to reinforce policies that have proven effective while identifying areas for improvement. Continued investment in teacher pay, professional development and school resources will be essential to maintain and improve the state’s standing.

Stakeholders—including school districts, legislators and community groups—are encouraged to build on the momentum highlighted by the WalletHub study. By championing policies that protect tenure, increase funding and foster a positive work environment, Indiana can strive for an even higher ranking in future assessments.

Overall, the 13th‑place ranking underscores Indiana’s progress in creating a supportive landscape for teachers, benefitting both educators and the families they serve.
