Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers told local media Thursday that a coordinated four‑day effort, called Operation Late Checkout, resulted in 50 arrests across the county. The operation, which involved local, state and federal law‑enforcement agencies, targeted individuals attempting to lure children online for sexual exploitation.
Targeted focus on child exploitation
“This was an operation with a targeted goal of stopping human trafficking,” Sheriff Flowers said, emphasizing that the primary aim was to protect children. “Working to capture people who are trying to lure children on the internet and meet up with those children.”
Special Agent Alphonso Williams of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement added, “This operation shows that within our communities, there are dangerous individuals committing heinous crimes who think they can get away with it.”
Key arrests and ongoing investigations
Among the arrests was Carlos Reyes‑Ayala, accused of traveling to Indian River County to meet a child for sexual activity. Flowers noted that detectives operated a dedicated undercover chat room for days, engaging with suspects who sought to arrange meetings with minors. “We had a whole roomful of detectives that were chatting undercover with people who wanted to meet up with children. Our team was busy for days,” he said.
The 50 individuals taken into custody were nearly all charged with prostitution offenses, a common front for broader trafficking networks. Authorities also identified several persons they believe are victims of trafficking, and those investigations remain active.
Law‑enforcement’s commitment to community safety
“It hurts us. It hurts our hearts when we see these cases and we see these kids. So, that’s why we do these things,” Flowers said, underscoring the emotional toll on officers and the resolve to safeguard families.
Flowers expects the operation to yield additional arrests as investigations continue, reinforcing the county’s dedication to eradicating exploitation and protecting the most vulnerable members of the community.
Community response
Local residents expressed relief and gratitude for the swift action, noting that the operation sends a clear message that Indian River County will not tolerate predators. Faith‑based groups and family organizations praised the collaborative effort, calling it a vital step toward preserving the safety and moral fabric of the area.
Law‑enforcement officials plan to maintain a visible presence and continue outreach programs aimed at educating parents and children about online safety. The Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with information about potential trafficking activity to contact the department immediately.
