India Lightning Strikes Kill 14

Lightning strikes in India’s mineral-rich eastern state of Jharkhand have killed at least 14 people, according to police reports. The strikes, which occurred on Tuesday, also injured at least seven people, mostly farm workers in open fields in the state’s Giridih district.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rainfall in the state over the next few days, which may lead to further flooding and landslides. This year’s torrential rains have already brought intense floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam, killing nearly 90 people, and in the southern state of Kerala, where rains have displaced thousands from their homes.
