India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has strategically diversified its oil sources following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz caused by the ongoing Israeli-U.S. conflict with Iran. Traditionally reliant on Middle Eastern oil, Indian refiners have now turned to Latin American and African nations to ensure a steady supply.
Shift in Import Strategy
In response to the geopolitical tensions, Indian refiners increased their imports from countries such as Venezuela, Brazil, Angola, and Nigeria. This shift was necessary after the conflict in the Middle East affected shipping routes, particularly through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. According to preliminary data from Kpler, these adjustments have allowed India to maintain its overall import levels at 4.57 million barrels per day (bpd) in April, consistent with March figures, though down 15.5% from the previous year.
Continued Russian Imports and Middle Eastern Dynamics
Despite reducing imports from Russia by about 29.4% in March due to maintenance at Nayara Energy’s refinery, India is set to receive approximately 1.9 million bpd of Russian oil in May. Additionally, India resumed imports from Iran after a seven-year hiatus, facilitated by a temporary waiver from Washington aimed at stabilizing global oil prices.
Meanwhile, imports from the United Arab Emirates rebounded significantly in April, with the UAE and Saudi Arabia being the only Gulf producers able to bypass the Strait of Hormuz through alternative pipelines. The UAE’s exit from OPEC in May has further influenced its oil export strategy, contributing to an increased share of OPEC oil in India’s imports, rising to 45.2% in April from about 30% in March.
Impact on Global Oil Market
India’s strategic realignment of its oil import sources underscores the broader impact of geopolitical tensions on global energy markets. As India continues to navigate these challenges, its ability to adapt and secure diverse energy supplies remains crucial for its economic stability and growth.
