Immigration advocates are calling for more oversight at the U.S. Immigration and Customs facility in Miramar, Florida, following reports of inhuman conditions, including overcrowding and a lack of privacy.
Concerns Over Facility Conditions
The advocates, who include the Circle of Protection, an immigration advocate group, are demanding that members of Congress conduct unannounced visits to the facility and inspections. They claim that the facility is not meant to hold individuals, but rather serve as a check-in facility, and that people are being detained for extended periods of time.
Silvia Munoz, with the Circle of Protection, shared the story of a woman who spent several hours at the facility without access to water or food. The advocates are also concerned about the heat in the facility, which is common in South Florida.
The ICE facility in Miramar is meant for processing and is not a detention center. However, the advocates claim that it is being used as such, and that the conditions are inhumane.
