Philadelphia residents and visitors strolling through Spruce Street Harbor Park this summer will encounter a new visual experience: a series of hand‑crafted flags that flutter above the waterfront. The installation, titled “Roots of Resilience,” is part of the park’s seasonal art program and runs through September 7.
Artists share personal journeys
Sixteen artists—some local, others from abroad—designed the flags to convey their own narratives of immigration and the process of putting down roots in a new community. Each flag combines text, symbols, and imagery that reflect the creator’s background, challenges, and hopes for the future.
Libby Rosa, Arts Programming Coordinator for the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, explained that the project is meant to be open‑ended. “No one is going to read the same things from these flags, but hopefully people can take away maybe more empathy for each other,” Rosa said. She added that the exhibition aligns with a broader citywide conversation about belonging and cultural exchange.
Public art encourages dialogue
The flags are positioned along the park’s promenade, allowing passersby to pause, read, and consider the varied experiences that shape Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. By presenting these stories in a public, accessible setting, the exhibition seeks to foster understanding across generations and cultures.
Visitors are encouraged to share their reflections on the park’s website, creating a digital dialogue that extends the conversation beyond the physical space. The park’s management hopes the project will inspire similar community‑focused art initiatives in the future.

As Philadelphia continues to celebrate its rich tapestry of cultures, the flag installation offers a tangible reminder that the city’s strength lies in the diverse stories of its residents.
