IMF Says Global Bond Markets Remain Orderly Amid Rising Yields

London – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) told reporters on Thursday that global bond markets continue to operate in an orderly fashion despite recent spikes in yields that have pushed borrowing costs to their highest levels in decades.

According to the IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack, the 10‑year U.S. Treasury yield – the benchmark for global borrowing costs and asset pricing – rose as high as 5.34% on Thursday, marking its highest point since 2002. The yield also recorded its biggest quarterly increase of the century for the three months ending in September, a rise that has reverberated through other major markets, from France and Britain in Europe to Japan in Asia.

“What we see globally is that bond markets are continuing to function in an orderly manner,” Kozack said during a press conference. She added that while markets remain stable, energy prices continue to pose a challenge for the global economy.

Kozack highlighted that diesel, gasoline and jet fuel prices are up between 60% and 97% compared with pre‑conflict levels, reflecting the impact of the ongoing Iran war and limited global refining capacity. “We’ve seen that the energy shock, which is part of what’s feeding headline inflation, is not over yet,” she warned.

The IMF’s assessment comes at a time when investors are closely watching how higher borrowing costs and elevated energy prices might affect growth prospects worldwide. The organization’s reassurance that bond markets remain orderly provides a measure of confidence for policymakers and market participants alike.

While the IMF did not forecast a specific trajectory for yields or inflation, its comments suggest that, despite current pressures, the underlying market infrastructure continues to support orderly trading and price discovery.

Analysts note that the sharp rise in U.S. Treasury yields reflects broader concerns about tightening monetary policy and fiscal dynamics, yet the absence of disorderly market behavior indicates resilience in the financial system.

Energy price volatility remains a focal point for both governments and businesses, as higher fuel costs can translate into increased production expenses and consumer price pressures. The IMF’s observation underscores the need for continued monitoring of energy markets as part of the broader effort to stabilize inflation and sustain economic growth.

Overall, the IMF’s statement offers a balanced view: bond markets are functioning as intended, but challenges persist, particularly on the energy front. Market participants are advised to stay vigilant as they navigate the evolving landscape of yields, inflation, and global economic conditions.
