Todd Stewart, a 68-year-old retiree, was allegedly butchered on his own front lawn in Martinez, California, by Marcos Iriarte-Valdez, a 36-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela.
Background of the Accused Killer
Iriarte-Valdez has been in the United States since 2007 and has a rap sheet that includes three counts of burglary, receiving stolen property, a DUI hit-and-run, inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, and violating a protective order.
A judge appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom released Iriarte-Valdez from jail the day before the attack, despite an active ICE detainer. Tom Homan, President Trump’s border czar, criticized Newsom and California’s sanctuary regime for prioritizing politics over public safety.
Homan stated, ‘This person’s dead because Governor Newsom and the state of California puts politics — hatred of President Trump — over public safety.’ He added that nothing in California’s sanctuary law stops a deputy from picking up the phone to notify ICE before releasing an illegal immigrant.
Response from Newsom’s Office
Newsom’s office responded by blaming the Trump administration, insisting that the feds ‘should do their job instead of blaming California for ICE’s enforcement failures.’
