A man fleeing federal immigration authorities and other federal agents was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on Tuesday, authorities said. The unidentified 28-year-old Mexican citizen was among four people in a vehicle that was stopped in a gas station parking lot just before 6:45 a.m. in St. Augustine, Florida.
All four occupants fled on foot during an encounter with agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). One ran across a busy road, was struck by an oncoming semi-truck, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 64-year-old truck driver stopped immediately and tried to render aid to the man, the agency said. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is currently investigating the traffic fatality.
