Idaho’s Population Surge Influences State’s Political Landscape

Idaho is experiencing significant changes in its political landscape due to rapid population growth, as highlighted by Secretary of State Phil McGrane during a recent address to the Boise business community. The state saw the second-highest population growth in the nation in 2025, with a 10.4% increase, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Economic and Political Shifts

Boise’s evolving skyline and a 50% increase in business filings from 2020 to 2025 reflect the economic impact of this growth. However, it’s not just economic opportunities attracting newcomers. Many are fleeing natural disasters and political climates in their home states, particularly California, which is the largest source of migrants to Idaho. Contrary to stereotypes, 77% of these Californians are registered Republicans, contributing to the state’s increasing Republican voter base.

Internal Party Dynamics

This influx is creating new dynamics within Idaho’s Republican Party. Long-time residents focus on issues like agriculture and water rights, while new arrivals are more engaged in social and policy debates. This shift is reflected in the increase of registered Republicans from 58% to 62% since McGrane took office in 2023.

Voter Participation Concerns

Despite these changes, voter turnout remains a concern. Only 73% of Idaho’s voting-age population is registered to vote, and just 12% participated in the recent primary election for governor. McGrane emphasized the importance of voter engagement, noting that low turnout can significantly impact election outcomes, as seen in a 2020 local race decided by just two votes.

As Idaho continues to grow, the political landscape will likely keep evolving, with voter participation playing a crucial role in shaping the state’s future.
