West Ada School District has hired Idaho Democratic Rep. Soñia Galaviz as a multilingual learner consultant. Galaviz, a Boise educator, will begin her new role on July 30. She is leaving the Boise School District, where she earned numerous honors, including the National Education Association Foundation’s top prize for teaching excellence in 2017.
Background and Experience
Galaviz started teaching in 2002 and was elected to the Idaho House in 2022. She serves on the House Education Committee and has built a reputation as a dedicated educator who connects with students’ families. In her new role, Galaviz will oversee multilingual learning and assist teachers whose students speak more languages than just English.
Galaviz said she reached out to West Ada Superintendent Derek Bub and expressed interest in a job in the state’s largest district. She emphasized that serving and advocating for students is consistent across the state, regardless of the district.
Recent Legislative Actions
During this year’s legislative session, Galaviz opposed House Bill 634, which would have removed some spending flexibility for school districts. In 2025, she opposed the controversial flag and banner bill, citing concerns over its sweeping control over how teachers can decorate their classrooms.
West Ada trustees recently voted to leave the Idaho School Boards Association, with Bub stating that the organization pushed for legislation West Ada wouldn’t support. Galaviz noted that West Ada didn’t hire her for her politics, but rather for her experience and qualifications in teaching.
