Idaho Gas Prices Reach $4.62 per Gallon, Making Travel Costly for Families

Idaho residents are feeling the pinch at the pump. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has climbed to $4.62, a jump of $1.16 from last year and the highest level recorded since 2020. The increase follows a national trend of rising fuel costs tied to higher crude‑oil prices, which analysts attribute to the ongoing war with Iran.

How Idaho Compares Nationwide

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), Idaho now ranks seventh among the most expensive states for gasoline. Washington follows closely at $5.51 per gallon, while California remains the costliest at $5.86. The national average sits at $4.53 per gallon, the highest figure since 2022.

Local Prices by City

Gas stations across the Gem State are reporting similar figures. In Boise, the price is $4.58 per gallon; Coeur d’Alene sees $4.61; Franklin averages $4.39; Idaho Falls $4.54; Lewiston $4.69; Pocatello $4.60; Rexburg $4.58; and Twin Falls $4.61. Diesel is also climbing, with some drivers in New Meadows paying $5.00 per gallon for the fuel that powers trucks and farm equipment.

What Experts Recommend

AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde explains that, historically, gasoline prices drop after Labor Day as drivers travel less and refineries switch to a cheaper winter blend. “This year is anything but typical,” Conde said. “The war with Iran has pushed crude oil higher, and that ripple effect is being felt at every pump in Idaho.” He advises motorists to consider a few practical steps to stretch each gallon farther: keep tires properly inflated, remove excess weight from vehicles, and combine trips when possible.

Historical Context

Looking back at the past several years, the price trajectory shows a sharp rise during the pandemic and a gradual decline before the recent surge. In 2020, the average price was $2.46 per gallon; it jumped to $3.79 in 2021, $4.51 in 2022, fell slightly to $4.16 in 2023, and then decreased to $3.58 in 2024 and $3.47 in 2025 before the current $4.62 level.

Impact on Idaho Families

For many Idaho families, the higher cost of fuel translates into higher household expenses. Commuters with longer drives feel the impact most acutely, and small business owners who rely on transportation are also facing tighter margins. While the price surge is a challenge, local leaders and business owners are encouraged to explore energy‑saving measures and to support policies that promote domestic energy production, which can help stabilize prices over the long term.

Looking Ahead

Analysts caution that as long as geopolitical tensions persist, gasoline prices may remain elevated. However, they note that market forces could bring relief if diplomatic solutions ease the conflict or if domestic oil output increases. Idaho drivers are advised to stay informed through reliable sources such as AAA and to plan their travel wisely to mitigate the financial strain.
