An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was living in the US without legal permission, while attempting to conduct a traffic stop in Houston on Tuesday.
Incident Details
According to an ICE spokesperson, Salgado Araujo refused to follow several verbal commands and rammed into one of the law enforcement vehicles. The officer fired his weapon in self-defense after Salgado Araujo allegedly attempted to run over him with his vehicle.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General is leading an investigation into the shooting, with the FBI’s Houston field office investigating a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
Reaction and Investigation
Activists and Texas Democratic lawmakers are demanding a full, independent investigation and the release of all available evidence. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, whose district includes the area of the incident, called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force.
Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo Salgado, described his father as a hardworking Mexican man who was in the process of obtaining his work permit through the legal process. He was on his way to work, picking up his workers, when the incident occurred.
