Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been directed to halt most traffic stops after two people were fatally shot during federal immigration enforcement operations. The victims, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas, and Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, were not the targets of those operations.
Investigations Underway
In Maine, local officials have asked for a full and impartial probe into the shooting. The Maine Attorney General is investigating the shooting alongside local and federal authorities. In Houston, the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is leading an investigation into the shooting, and the FBI’s Houston field office is investigating the alleged assault on a federal law enforcement officer.
The Harris County District Attorney’s office has also launched its own investigation into the killing of Salgado Araujo. The Houston Police Department has asked the Texas Department of Public Safety to conduct an investigation, saying it will ensure the investigation is independent and transparent.
Expansion of Body Cameras
ICE has also announced plans to expand the use of body cameras. This move comes after calls for increased transparency and accountability within the agency.
