ICE Enforcement Not Expected at Los Angeles World Cup Matches

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has confirmed that federal authorities have assured him there will be no civil immigration enforcement by ICE at the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches in Los Angeles. This announcement comes as local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies prepare security measures for the eight matches scheduled to begin on June 12.

During a press conference, Sheriff Luna addressed previous rumors about potential ICE presence at the events. He stated, “I personally called the head of Homeland Security here for the L.A. region, and they assured me that civil immigration enforcement would not be occurring at any of the games.” Luna emphasized that while federal agents will be present to ensure security, their role will not include immigration enforcement.

Heightened Security for Iran Matches

Additional security measures will be in place for the matches involving Iran, given the current geopolitical tensions. Iran is set to play its first match on June 15 at SoFi Stadium, located in an area with a significant Iranian community. Sheriff Luna noted that the situation with Iran adds a different dynamic, necessitating increased law enforcement presence to monitor potential protests or other activities.

Strict Drone Regulations

Authorities have also announced stringent regulations regarding drone usage around World Cup venues. Patrick Grandy, FBI assistant director in charge, stated that there will be a “zero tolerance policy” for unauthorized drone flights, with capabilities in place to safely intercept any violators.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman highlighted the extensive law enforcement deployment during the World Cup period, warning that it would be an inopportune time for criminal activities. “The district attorney’s office will prosecute you, and you will be punished,” Hochman affirmed.
