ICE detains Milo Yiannopoulos at New Orleans airport after immigration hearing miss

Federal immigration officials arrested British national Milo Yiannopoulos on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally on May 14, 2019, but subsequently overstayed his visa, violating U.S. immigration law.

Failure to appear triggers removal order

According to a DHS spokesperson, Yiannopoulos missed a scheduled immigration hearing on July 22. An immigration judge then issued a final order of removal, and ICE took him into custody pending deportation. The spokesperson added that Yiannopoulos will remain in ICE detention until the removal process is completed.

Background and ties to high‑profile figures

Yiannopoulos, known for his provocative right‑wing commentary, has previously worked for rapper‑turned‑presidential hopeful Ye (formerly Kanye West) as chief of staff and at Ye’s Yeezy clothing line. He left the brand two years ago after Ye announced plans for an adult‑entertainment venture under the Yeezy name. Ye is slated to perform Friday night at the New Orleans Caesars Superdome, though it is unclear whether Yiannopoulos traveled to Louisiana for the concert.

Trump administration’s immigration stance

The DHS spokesperson noted that the Trump administration is “working diligently to ensure that aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self‑deport.” This statement reflects the administration’s broader effort to tighten immigration enforcement and reduce unlawful presence.

Local impact

The arrest adds to recent ICE activity reported across Louisiana, highlighting the federal government’s focus on enforcing immigration laws in the state. Local officials have not yet commented on the detention, but the incident underscores the ongoing relevance of immigration policy to communities throughout the Gulf Coast.

What comes next?

Yiannopoulos will remain in ICE custody while the removal order is processed. If he wishes to contest the order, he must file a petition for review with the appropriate immigration court. Otherwise, he is expected to be deported to the United Kingdom in accordance with the final removal order.
