ICE detains British commentator Milo Yiannopoulos in Louisiana after missed immigration hearing

Federal immigration officials placed Milo Yiannopoulos, a United Kingdom national and self‑described libertarian, in ICE custody on Thursday at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner, Louisiana. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest, noting that Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally on May 14, 2019, but subsequently chose to overstay his welcome in violation of U.S. law.

Failure to appear triggers removal order

According to the DHS spokesperson, Yiannopoulos missed a scheduled immigration hearing on July 22. An immigration judge then issued a final order of removal, prompting ICE agents to take him into custody. “He will remain in ICE custody pending removal,” the spokesperson added.

Connections to high‑profile figures

Yiannopoulos has previously worked for rapper‑turned‑presidential hopeful Ye (formerly Kanye West), serving as the artist’s chief of staff during Ye’s 2020 and 2024 presidential bids and later as an employee of the Yeezy clothing line. He left the brand two years ago after Ye announced plans for an adult‑entertainment studio under the Yeezy name.

Ye is slated to perform at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Friday night, though it is unclear whether Yiannopoulos traveled to Louisiana to attend the concert.

Immigration enforcement under the Trump administration

The DHS spokesperson emphasized that the current administration is working diligently to ensure that illegal immigrants cannot remain in the country without facing removal. The statement reflects the administration’s broader focus on stricter immigration enforcement and the use of ICE to uphold the nation’s immigration laws.

Background on Yiannopoulos

Yiannopoulos first rose to prominence as a writer for the conservative outlet Breitbart, which former President Donald Trump once cited as a favored news source. He resigned from Breitbart in 2017 after backlash over remarks concerning minors and sexual abuse. Since then, Yiannopoulos has maintained a presence as an internet provocateur, frequently courting controversy with his outspoken political views.

The arrest adds another chapter to Yiannopoulos’s turbulent public life, highlighting the federal government’s resolve to enforce immigration statutes even against high‑profile foreign nationals who overstay their visas.
