An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed an illegal immigrant, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, in Houston this month. The incident occurred during a traffic stop, and the agent claimed that Salgado Araujo rammed into an ICE vehicle before being shot.
Investigation Ongoing
The Harris County district attorney’s office has confirmed that small bags found in Salgado Araujo’s van did not contain drugs, contrary to initial statements from the federal government. The bags were found to contain an electrolyte powder, which Salgado Araujo used to stay hydrated while working outdoors.
Salgado Araujo, a husband and father of three, was close to obtaining legal residency at the time of his death. His family has disputed the ICE agent’s account of the incident, and multiple investigations are ongoing.
The incident has added to a growing list of encounters between immigration agents and individuals in vehicles, with about 20 people shot at in their cars, some of them fatally.
