In a significant legal development, attorneys for Ibraheem Yazeed, a Montgomery resident, have filed a motion in the Circuit Court of Macon County seeking either an acquittal or a new trial. Yazeed was convicted earlier this year for the murder of Aniah Blanchard, a college student from Homewood, Alabama.
The motion, which consists of 22 points, argues that the evidence presented during the trial did not meet the standard of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Additionally, the defense claims that errors were made during the trial process, which they believe warrant a reconsideration of the verdict.
Yazeed was found guilty of felony murder and murder in connection with the 2019 shooting death of 19-year-old Blanchard. However, he was not convicted of capital murder on either count. In May, he received two life sentences for his role in Blanchard’s death.
The Case of Aniah Blanchard
Aniah Blanchard, a student at Southern Union Community College and the stepdaughter of UFC fighter Walt Harris, was last seen at a Chevron gas station in Auburn in October 2019. Her disappearance prompted a nationwide search, drawing attention from media outlets, including the “Dr. Phil” TV show. Evidence indicated that Yazeed was present at the gas station at the same time as Blanchard.
Blanchard’s car was discovered at an apartment complex in Montgomery, with blood found inside. Tragically, her body was located in a wooded area in Macon County about a month later, with evidence showing she had been shot in the head.
Legal and Legislative Impact
Yazeed’s arrest in Florida and his extensive criminal history have been focal points in the case. At the time of Blanchard’s death, Yazeed was out on bail, a fact that spurred legislative action in Alabama. The state passed “Aniah’s Law,” which restricts the granting of bail for certain offenses, reflecting the case’s impact on state policy.
