I-65 Construction Noise Raises Concerns for Old Louisville Residents

Residents in the Old Louisville area are voicing their concerns over the noise generated by the ongoing I-65 Central Corridor Project. The construction, which is part of a major infrastructure upgrade, has brought significant disruption to the neighborhood.

Community Concerns

Arlene Ward, a local resident, expressed her frustration, stating, “The noise just throws me a little bit off.” The constant sound of large trucks and construction activity has become a daily challenge for those living nearby. Turner Hawkins, another resident, highlighted the issue of semi-trucks and 18-wheelers, noting, “You kind of get the brake whine all the time.”

Ward also mentioned the intensity of the construction noise, saying, “It’s rumbling so hard. It’s like something’s going to either fall off the wall or the house is going to collapse. It’s kind of scary.”

Project Details

Mindy Peterson, spokesperson for the I-65 Central Corridor Project, explained that the current phase of construction is the loudest part of the project. “The work we are doing now is the loudest work that we’re going to have associated with this project,” Peterson said. This phase involves the demolition of three bridges and requires crews to work around the clock to maintain the project schedule.

Peterson emphasized the necessity of the continuous work, stating, “If we didn’t work around the clock, this is a closure that would not be able to be a two-month closure. This is a closure that would extend many more months.”

Understanding the Need

Despite the inconvenience, some residents acknowledge the importance of the construction work. Ward remarked, “It is what it is. They got to do the construction, otherwise it isn’t going to get done. So we got to deal with it.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding within the community of the need for infrastructure improvements, even amidst the temporary discomfort.
