Hyde Park Floods

Hyde Park residents and business owners are recovering after four inches of rain caused floodwaters to take over the neighborhood. The flooding, which occurred on Saturday, turned Arcadia Place into a river, with numerous family cars being towed and home basement walls torn out.

Residents Share Their Experiences

One father, Max Czernin, had to pull his son out of their stalled car and carry him to safety. "I mean this entire area was just a river," Czernin said. "It’s scary for them, and honestly for us, when you look at the water and it’s coming up your steps." Another resident, Sam McLaughlin, was trying to make it home when his car stalled. "I had my three-year-old son in the back. I had to get out, get him, walk around, and pull him out of the water," McLaughlin said.

The flooding has been a recurring problem in the area, with the Czernin family experiencing three floods in eight years. "It’s a problem that needs to be addressed. Somebody needs to figure out a solution because the footage is crazy and just a lot of people are getting hurt, and at some point, someone’s really going to get hurt," Czernin said.

Businesses Affected

Local businesses, such as Neko Sushi, were also affected by the flooding. Owner Yeon Kim described herself as feeling "very anxious and frustrated" as she dealt with yet another flood inside her restaurant. The water was up to her waist in less than an hour, and she is unsure if she can afford to continue running her business in the area.
