Bend, Ore. – The Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO) is making it easier for families to welcome a canine companion by slashing adoption fees by half during its Barktober promotion. The discount runs from Thursday, Oct. 1 through Saturday, Oct. 10 and applies to every dog in the shelter, from playful puppies to calm senior dogs.
Why the discount matters for Bend families
“There is no one right age to adopt,” said Amber Kostoff, HSCO Executive Director. “Some people love raising a puppy, while others are looking for an adolescent to join them on adventures or an older dog who is ready for a quieter home. Our client care team can help adopters find the dog that fits their household style.”
The reduced fee is more than a price cut. Each adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, age‑appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, collar, identification tag and leash. New owners also receive a complimentary health exam at a participating local veterinary clinic, a supply of food to help the pet transition home, and a toys‑and‑treats goodie box. Local pet businesses are contributing special offers, further easing the financial burden for new pet parents.
Adoption process remains unchanged
HSCO emphasizes that its standard adoption procedures still apply. Prospective adopters must complete the application, meet the shelter’s screening criteria, and pay any required dog licensing fees, which are separate from the discounted adoption fee.
Impact on the community
Since the start of 2026, HSCO has facilitated 754 adoptions, moving animals from the shelter into homes throughout the Bend area. The organization’s kennels are currently at capacity, underscoring the need for additional shelter space to house stray animals, accommodate court‑ordered pet holds, accept owner surrenders, and provide urgent care for pets in crisis.
“Our goal is to make pet ownership accessible while ensuring the health and safety of both animals and families,” Kostoff added. “Barktober is an opportunity for the community to come together and give these dogs a second chance.”
How to get involved
Interested families can view available dogs on the HSCO website at hsco.org. The shelter is located at 61170 SE 27th St. in Bend and welcomes visitors Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Local businesses are encouraged to support the promotion by offering discounts or donating supplies for the goodie boxes. Community members who cannot adopt but wish to help can volunteer, donate supplies, or sponsor a dog’s medical care.
Looking ahead
HSCO plans to continue offering seasonal promotions that lower barriers to pet adoption and strengthen the bond between animals and Bend families. By providing comprehensive care packages and financial assistance, the shelter aims to reduce the number of homeless pets and promote responsible pet ownership across Deschutes County.
