Howard University Enrollment Crisis

Howard University recently un-enrolled 502 incoming freshmen due to outstanding balances, leaving students and families frustrated and seeking answers. The university sent an email to the affected students on July 22, stating that they had not completed the required steps to secure their enrollment for the fall 2026 semester.

Student Reactions

Students took to social media to express their disappointment and frustration, with one student, Isabella Williams, posting a tearful video on Instagram. Williams explained that she was told she was on track and that her scholarships could come through later, only to be un-enrolled from her dream school.

Other students reported a disconnect between department advisors and administration staff, with some experiencing unpleasant interactions with staff. Kalahn Morris, an incoming freshman from Chicago, said he was told by a staff member that “college is expensive” and that his mother should “just deal with it like everyone else.”

University Response

Howard University did not respond to requests for comments about the un-enrollment situation or administration’s interactions with students leading into the school year. However, the university did send a statement to the Howard community on July 23, explaining that the un-enrollment was due to students not completing the required steps to secure their enrollment.

The statement noted that the university is working to finalize plans for the fall 2026 semester, including academic schedules, administration of financial aid, orientation, and student support services. The university also stated that it understands the frustration the un-enrollment causes for students and families working through financial aid and scholarship matters.

Next Steps

The Office of University Communications sent a statement to the Howard community on July 23, offering an explanation about the incident and advice on next steps. The statement advised students to document everything, contact the appropriate offices, and continue applying for scholarships.

The HU NAACP chapter also offered suggestions on how to help families in need of answers regarding un-enrollment, including speaking out against the un-enrollment challenges as a way of strengthening the university overall.
