How to Protect Yourself from Sophisticated Phone and Text Scams

Scammers no longer need to hack a bank account to steal money. By spoofing a bank’s phone number and using publicly available personal details, fraudsters can create a convincing sense of urgency that convinces victims to hand over access.

What the scams look like

Calls often appear to come from the correct number for a financial institution. The caller may already know the victim’s name, partial account information, or even a Social Security number. They typically claim the customer has been the victim of fraud and must act immediately to protect the account.

This urgency is the core of the deception. Technology now makes it easier than ever to manipulate caller ID and to use stolen or publicly available data to make the call seem legitimate.

How to verify a call

The safest response is to avoid answering unexpected calls, even when the caller ID shows a familiar number. If you receive a voicemail from a bank or credit‑card company, do not call the number left in the message. Instead, use a trusted phone number—such as the one printed on the back of your card or the number on a recent paper statement—to contact the institution directly.

You can also visit the official website of the bank or credit‑card issuer and locate the customer‑service phone number there. This puts you in control of the communication and prevents the scammer from dictating the conversation.

Beware of suspicious texts and emails

Scammers use the same tactics in texts and emails, claiming an account has been compromised, a payment is fraudulent, or immediate action is required. Do not click any links or reply with personal information until you have independently verified the message.

Even security codes sent by text can be dangerous. If a fraudster asks you to read back a verification code, providing it gives them another piece of information that can be used to gain access to your account.

Red flags to watch for

  • Requests for immediate action, such as withdrawing money, transferring funds, purchasing gift cards, or providing personal data.
  • Instructions to keep the contact secret, telling you not to contact the bank, police, or a family member.
  • Calls that claim to be from a relative or trusted person but cannot provide a pre‑agreed private code phrase.

If you encounter any of these signs, end the conversation and contact your financial institution or law enforcement through a trusted number.

Using a family code phrase

Because artificial‑intelligence voice generators can now mimic familiar voices, families can protect themselves by establishing a private code phrase that is never posted publicly. If an unexpected call claims to be from a relative, ask for the phrase. If the caller cannot provide it, the call is likely fraudulent.

Take the time to verify

The most effective defense is to slow down. Do not feel pressured to act on the spot. Hang up, verify the contact through an independent channel, and only then decide whether there is a real problem. This simple step removes the scammer’s control and gives you the opportunity to protect your finances.
