How to Prepare Your Car for Long‑Term Storage

If you’re planning to leave your vehicle idle for an extended period—whether you’re traveling abroad or simply storing it over the winter—proper preparation is essential. Skipping the right steps can lead to costly repairs when you finally return to the road.

Choose the Right Storage Location

Indoor storage, such as a garage, shop, or covered driveway, offers the best protection from weather, pests, and vandalism. When indoor space isn’t available, a dedicated automobile storage unit is a solid alternative, especially for stays of six months to a year. Outdoor options like a personal driveway or long‑term parking lot can work if you take extra precautions.

Timing Matters

Six to twelve months is generally the sweet spot for long‑term storage. Shorter periods may be better suited to lending the car to a trusted friend or family member, which keeps the drivetrain lubricated and prevents flat‑spotting of tires. If you anticipate being away for more than a year and the vehicle’s value is low, selling may be more economical than paying for storage.

Preparation Checklist

  • Wash Inside and Out – Remove salt, grime, and food debris to deter insects and rodents.
  • Fill the Fuel Tank – A full tank reduces moisture buildup that can cause internal rust.
  • Add Fuel Stabilizer – For storage longer than three months, a stabilizer prevents gasoline from oxidizing.
  • Change the Oil – Fresh oil protects engine parts better than used oil.
  • Top Off All Fluids – Include brake, coolant, power‑steering, and transmission fluids to avoid corrosion.
  • Maintain the Battery – Connect a low‑voltage battery tender or start the car every two to four weeks.
  • Prevent Pests – Use peppermint oil on cotton balls, vacuum food crumbs, and seal openings with steel wool. Some owners also place Irish Spring soap or mothballs, though these methods lack scientific backing.
  • Control Moisture – In damp environments, a dehumidifier or silica‑gel packs can keep humidity low.
  • Disengage the Parking Brake – Instead, use wheel chocks to avoid brake‑shoe seizure.
  • Elevate the Vehicle – Jack stands keep tires from flat‑spotting and make pest access harder.

Special Considerations for Electric Vehicles

Many of the same steps apply—cleaning, moisture control, and pest prevention—but electric cars also require attention to battery charge levels. Keep the battery at a moderate state of charge and consider a smart charger that maintains optimal voltage.

When You Return

Don’t jump straight into a long drive. Start the engine, let it idle, and check all fluid levels. Inspect the brakes, tires, and any signs of pest activity before heading out.

Following this checklist helps ensure your vehicle emerges from storage in tip‑top shape, saving you time, money, and frustration.
