How to Keep Your Family Safe from Foodborne Illness at Home and in the Grocery Store

Recent food recalls and outbreak reports have reminded shoppers that hidden hazards can lurk in everyday groceries. While no store can guarantee a completely risk‑free product, consumers can dramatically lower the chance of illness by applying a few proven safety steps while shopping, preparing, and storing food.

Know the Common Risks

Hazards include undeclared allergens, foreign objects, bacteria, viruses, and cross‑contamination. Pathogens such as listeria and salmonella cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste, according to Consumer Reports. Foods that are often eaten raw—fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, and deli meats—pose a higher risk because they miss the heat‑based “kill step” that eliminates many microbes. Listeria is especially troublesome because it can survive and even grow at refrigerator temperatures.

Shop Smart

“Unfortunately, you sometimes have to be on guard when you go shopping because there could be an issue with the food that you’re buying that’s lurking that not even the store knows,” said James E. Rogers, director of food safety at Consumer Reports. To reduce exposure:

  • Choose pasteurized milk and cheese rather than raw or unpasteurized dairy, which can harbor salmonella and E. coli.
  • Wash produce under running water; scrub firm items with a clean produce brush.
  • Remove outer lettuce leaves before use.
  • When possible, buy whole fruits and vegetables and cut them at home to avoid pre‑cut contamination.

Prevent Cross‑Contamination in the Kitchen

Simple habits keep germs from moving from one food item to another:

  • Wash hands frequently while preparing meals.
  • Clean counters, sinks, knives, and cutting boards with warm, soapy water.
  • Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meat and for other foods.
  • Do not rinse raw meat; splashing can spread bacteria to surrounding surfaces.
  • Store raw meat on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator to keep juices from dripping onto ready‑to‑eat foods.
  • Clean any refrigerator spills immediately.
  • Refrigerate perishable items promptly.
  • Use a food thermometer to verify that meat reaches a safe internal temperature.

Protect Vulnerable Family Members

Pregnant people, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious illness from listeria. Consumer Reports advises these groups to avoid deli meat unless it is heated until steaming hot before consumption.

Stay Informed About Recalls

Recall alerts are posted by Consumer Reports, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. Alerts typically list product names, lot numbers, and dates. If you discover a recalled item at home, follow the manufacturer’s instructions—usually discarding the product or returning it for a refund. Rogers noted that recalled items can sometimes remain on shelves while stores work to remove them, so personal vigilance remains essential.

“It’s really important for the consumer to rely on their own information to protect them from recalls and outbreaks,” Rogers emphasized.

Take Action Today

By integrating these practices into everyday routines, families can safeguard their health without sacrificing convenience. Simple steps—washing produce, separating raw and ready‑to‑eat foods, monitoring recall notices—provide a strong defense against invisible threats and help keep loved ones safe.
