Houston-area FIFA World Cup fans made the best of rainy weather and flooding earlier this week. The first named tropical storm of the season caused delays and cancellations, but international and local fans persevered.
Preparations and Response
Jeff Lindner, a meteorologist with the Harris County Flood Control District, said preparations with other agencies started Sunday, well before the first tropical storm of the season was named Arthur. The storm quickly dissipated, but the rain, street flooding, and high creek levels had mostly subsided by early afternoon Wednesday.
Lindner noted that the wind was a significant concern, with gusty wind conditions. Once the rain cleared up, the extreme heat and humidity became a concern, with health officials urging fans to take precautions.
Advice for International Travelers
Local fan Yoalli Pacheco shared advice for international travelers, saying, “I just say, enjoy your time here. Go visit some restaurants.” The Harris County Flood Control District also reported that it has more construction underway this year alone than it has in its entire 90-year history, with hundreds of projects completed in Harris County.
