House Ethics Committee launches probe of Rep. Jimmy Gomez over alleged sexual misconduct

The U.S. House Ethics Committee disclosed on Monday that it has opened an investigation into Democratic Representative Jimmy Gomez of California. The probe stems from allegations that Gomez engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with a congressional staffer, conduct that would violate House ethics rules.

Three sources told CNN in June that the panel was already reviewing the matter. In response, Gomez acknowledged past personal mistakes that caused pain to his wife and family, but maintained that his actions were consensual, did not break the law, and did not breach House ethics standards. He pledged to cooperate fully with the committee and to provide any information requested.

“Years ago, I made personal mistakes outside my marriage that have caused real pain to my wife and family,” Gomez said in a statement. “Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most.” He added that he has sought professional assistance to heal his relationships and is working toward honesty, transparency, and respect within his family.

The Ethics Committee emphasized that the existence of an investigation and its public disclosure do not, by themselves, indicate that any ethics violation has occurred. The panel’s statement noted that the inquiry will review the allegations and determine whether any House rules were breached.

Background on the ethics process

The House Ethics Committee is responsible for enforcing standards of conduct for members of Congress and their staff. When a complaint is filed, the committee may open a formal investigation, interview witnesses, and request documents. Findings can lead to recommendations for disciplinary action, ranging from reprimand to expulsion, depending on the severity of any violations.

Potential implications

If the committee finds that Gomez violated House rules, possible outcomes could include a formal reprimand, a fine, or other sanctions. The investigation also carries political ramifications, as ethics inquiries often influence public perception and can affect a lawmaker’s standing within their party and among constituents.

Gomez’s office has not provided further comment beyond his earlier statement. The investigation remains ongoing, and the committee has not set a timeline for its conclusion.
