The bill is part of a larger $95 billion budget bill that would also provide funding for the U.S. war with Iran and aid to American farmers. The House Republicans are using a mechanism called budget reconciliation to pass the bill, which allows the party in power to pass sweeping fiscal policy by lowering the Senate’s threshold for advancement from 60 votes to a simple majority.
The framework was adopted in a narrow 216 to 214 vote, with all Democrats opposed. The bill has been met with opposition from Democrats, who claim it is tantamount to voter suppression. However, Republicans have argued that it is aimed at enhancing confidence in American elections.
President Donald Trump has expressed his support for the bill, posting on Truth Social that he is watching the vote closely and hopes Republicans can unify to secure elections against foreign interference and illegal immigrant voting.
