Hoover, Ala. – In a proud moment for local education, twenty‑one seniors from Hoover High School and Spain Park High School have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. The distinction places these students among the nation’s top academic performers, with only roughly one percent of the 1.2 million test‑takers achieving semifinalist status.
Hoover High School semifinalists
The Hoover High School cohort includes Krish Nathan, Robert Ross, Adrien Lowe, Dang Khoi Nguyen, Phoebe Beaukelman, Jingyi Su, Kylie Crosby, Nia Reese, Savannah Deakle, Serena Agrawal and Audrey Law. Each earned the honor based on their scores on the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and a strong academic record.
Spain Park High School semifinalists
Spain Park High School’s ten semifinalists are Samuel Fishman, Auston Parks, William “Will” Rothman, Carter Flurry, Adarsh Vadlakonda, Hillty Tran, Julie Parks, Margaret “Maggie” Parker, Dallas Lewis and Joseph “Nash” Dorion. Like their Hoover peers, they demonstrated exceptional performance on the qualifying test and meet the program’s rigorous standards.
What the semifinalist status means
Being named a National Merit semifinalist is an important milestone in the scholarship’s multi‑stage selection process. To advance to finalist standing, students must submit a detailed application that includes academic transcripts, a record of extracurricular involvement, leadership roles, employment, honors and awards, as well as a personal essay and a recommendation from a school official. They must also provide a confirming SAT or ACT score that shows continued academic excellence.
Approximately 95 % of semifinalists are expected to become finalists, and from that pool about 6,700 students will ultimately receive National Merit Scholarships. The finalists for the 2027 cycle are slated to be announced in the spring of 2027.
Community response
Local educators, parents and community leaders have praised the achievement, noting that it reflects both the dedication of the students and the supportive environment fostered by the schools. “These young scholars exemplify the values of hard work, faith, and family that we hold dear in Hoover,” said a Hoover City Schools spokesperson. “We are grateful to the teachers and families who have helped them reach this point.”
Both schools plan to celebrate the semifinalists at upcoming assemblies, providing an opportunity for peers and families to recognize the students’ accomplishments.
Looking ahead
The National Merit program continues to be a benchmark of academic excellence for high‑school seniors across the United States. For Hoover and Spain Park students, the semifinalist honor not only opens doors to scholarship opportunities but also serves as a testament to the quality of education and community support in the Hoover area.
