Hoops4Unity, a basketball league and organization, is bringing the community together through basketball. Founded by Mohammed Mohamud, the league aims to provide a platform for athletes of all backgrounds to play and participate.
Somali Week Tournament
The league recently hosted a Somali Week tournament, which featured a young adult tournament and a middle school tournament. The event was a huge success, with nearly 800 people in attendance.
Mohamud, who is 23, was inspired to start Hoops4Unity after moving to Minneapolis from Utah in 2014. He saw the potential for a diverse basketball league that could bring the community together.
Community Support
Hoops4Unity has received support from the community, with many people attending their events and participating in their programs. The league has also partnered with local organizations to provide mentorship and academic support to its athletes.
According to Mohamud, the league’s goal is to create a competitive platform for basketball players in Minneapolis, where players are sometimes afforded less opportunities or recognition than those in the suburbs.
Hoops4Unity co-founder Amir Derie, 24, said that the league is not just about basketball, but about bringing the community together. He added that the league has been successful in creating a sense of unity and belonging among its athletes and fans.
