Honoring America’s Fallen: The Role of the ABMC Overseas

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our nation, many of whom rest in cemeteries far from home. The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) plays a crucial role in preserving the memory of these heroes, maintaining 26 permanent American military cemeteries and 31 federal memorials, monuments, and markers across 17 countries.

The Origins of Memorial Day

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began after the Civil War as a time for Americans to place flowers on the graves of the fallen. This tradition has evolved into a national day of remembrance for all who have died in military service to the United States.

The American Battle Monuments Commission

Established by President Warren G. Harding in 1923, the ABMC was created to honor American service members buried overseas and to preserve the memory of the battles they fought. Under the guidance of Gen. John J. Pershing, the commission’s mission was to ensure that these overseas cemeteries would stand as enduring national shrines, not merely as burial grounds.

Today, the ABMC’s sites are the final resting place for more than 200,000 U.S. service members. These cemeteries and memorials serve as solemn reminders of the cost of freedom and the sacrifices made by countless individuals in defense of our nation.

Remembering Maj. Gen. William “Bill” Matz Jr.

The episode also pays tribute to retired Army Maj. Gen. William “Bill” Matz Jr., a Vietnam veteran and former ABMC secretary who passed away earlier this year. Matz was instrumental in renewing attention to America’s overseas military cemeteries, emphasizing the duty to care for these sacred sites.

As we observe Memorial Day, let us remember that this holiday is more than just a long weekend. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of those who never returned home and to honor their memory by ensuring their stories are not forgotten.
