Hollywood Park Residents Urged to Protect Families and Pets After Rabid Raccoon Found

Hollywood Park police issued a public‑health alert on Wednesday after a raccoon captured near the 300 block of Yosemite Drive tested positive for rabies. The animal is believed to have had contact with a rabid skunk, raising concerns for both residents and their pets.

What the police are advising

According to the department’s news release, no human exposure has been reported so far, but officials stress the importance of immediate precautions. “I highly recommend you educate your children to not provoke or go near wildlife, especially if they appear sick,” the release stated.

Police are urging anyone who sees a wild or stray animal acting unusually to keep a safe distance and avoid attempting to capture or handle the creature. If a person or pet does come into contact with wildlife, they should seek medical attention right away and contact local authorities.

Vaccination and reporting steps

Pet owners are reminded to verify that their dogs and cats are up to date on rabies vaccinations. The rabies vaccine is a critical safeguard that protects both animals and people from a disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

Residents can report suspicious animal behavior or sightings to Bexar County dispatch at 210‑335‑6000. Additional contacts include Hollywood Park Animal Control and the local law‑enforcement office.

Why rabies matters to families

Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the central nervous system, leading to severe neurological symptoms and death if untreated. The virus is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, but it can also spread via scratches or saliva that contacts an open wound.

Because the disease is preventable through timely vaccination, public‑health officials stress that keeping pets current on their shots is the most effective way to protect families. The warning also serves as a reminder for parents to teach children to respect wildlife and avoid close contact with any animal that looks ill or behaves erratically.

Community response

Neighborhood leaders have expressed gratitude for the police department’s swift communication. “We appreciate the clear guidance and ask all residents to share this information with neighbors,” said a spokesperson for the Hollywood Park Civic Association.

The police department will continue monitoring the area and will provide updates if additional cases are identified. In the meantime, officials ask the community to stay vigilant, keep pets protected, and report any concerns without delay.
