Historic ‘Big Boy’ Steam Engine to Pass Through Fort Wayne on National Tour

The historic Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive, operated by Union Pacific Railroad, is making its way through Indiana this week as part of a nationwide tour. This tour is in celebration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, a milestone that holds great significance for communities across the nation.

Big Boy’s Journey Through Indiana

On Friday, June 5, the massive locomotive will make a public stop in Argos at 2:30 p.m., offering residents a rare opportunity to see the world’s largest operating steam locomotive up close. Originally built during World War II to transport heavy freight through the mountainous regions of the American West, Big Boy No. 4014 has been meticulously restored by Union Pacific and returned to service in recent years.

Following its stop in Argos, the train will continue its journey eastward through northern Indiana, including a planned pass through Fort Wayne. Although the locomotive will be visible as it travels through Allen County, Union Pacific has noted that the Fort Wayne stop will not be open for public access.

A Celebration of American Heritage

This tour is part of Union Pacific’s broader efforts to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial in 2026. The journey of Big Boy No. 4014 not only highlights the engineering marvels of the past but also serves as a reminder of the country’s rich industrial heritage and the role railroads have played in shaping the nation.

As the locomotive makes its way across 10 states with over 50 planned stops, it continues to capture the imagination of train enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The sight of this colossal steam engine rolling through towns and cities is a testament to the enduring legacy of American innovation and the spirit of exploration that has driven the nation forward.
