Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Arrests 56-Year-Old Man for Tool Theft and Drug Possession

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – On August 22, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office took a 56‑year‑old man into custody after investigators linked him to a theft of tools from a work truck parked on Windhorst Road. The suspect, identified as Joe Talmadge Butts, was captured on surveillance video riding a bicycle while pulling a small trailer.

Investigation and Arrest

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident occurred on August 21 when Butts entered the bed of a work truck belonging to a local business. He removed multiple bags that contained several hundred dollars’ worth of tools. The truck’s security cameras recorded the suspect exiting the vehicle, loading the bags onto his bicycle, and departing the scene.

Deputies used the video footage to develop leads and quickly identified Butts as the individual in the recording. The following day, officers located him riding the same bicycle and pulling the same trailer along the same roadway. When deputies approached, Butts complied without resistance and was placed under arrest.

Search Yields Illegal Substance

During the booking process, deputies conducted a lawful search of Butts and discovered a small amount of methamphetamine in his pocket. The drug was seized as evidence, and the suspect now faces charges for both theft and possession of a controlled substance.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the swift resolution of the case demonstrates the department’s commitment to protecting local businesses and maintaining public safety. “We rely on community members and surveillance technology to help us identify and apprehend individuals who threaten the safety and property of our residents,” a spokesperson said.

Community Impact

Local business owners expressed relief that the theft was addressed promptly. The incident underscores the importance of vigilance and cooperation between law‑enforcement and the community, especially in areas where small businesses operate from commercial lots along busy corridors like Windhorst Road.

Authorities encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or has information about similar crimes to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the department’s tip line or online portal.

Legal Proceedings

Butts is being held on the combined charges of theft and possession of a controlled substance. He will appear before a Hillsborough County judge for an initial hearing, where bail and further conditions will be determined. The case will proceed through the county’s criminal court system.

Residents are reminded that theft, especially of tools and equipment essential to local trades, can have a ripple effect on the community’s economy. Prompt reporting and cooperation with law‑enforcement help deter future incidents and protect the livelihoods of hardworking Floridians.
